DISCRETE - "IN MY ROOM"

FRI JULY 19, 2024

"I love the way this video portrays the collapsing of inner space of the mind with the subtle arrangements of seemingly functional infrastructure. The video takes on a magical realism twist towards the end wherein the ghosts from our past - imbuing man-made structures with magical qualities - come back in a visceral way. If anyone has ever worked third shift in an industrial space built solely for utility, you know that these seemingly innocuous forms can take on lives of their own. Set to Kyle Yip's inherently nocturnal downtempo track "In My Room" is a visionary force."

Short Films Matter
Discrete’s Immersive and Experimental Music Video

SAT APR 22, 2023

★★★★☆

"Colin Greenfield’s direction on Discrete’s music video has brought an eerily beautiful visual experience in five minutes. With Ben Apgar playing the part of a construction surveyor, the video quickly sets up an ambiance of isolation and paranormality. The surveyor makes his way through the basement level of a building, the only illumination source coming from his lamp. The bubbling paranoia seeps in quickly as he maneuvers through the empty underground.

The music composition from Discrete has a compelling beat that meshes well with the unravelling visuals. The music’s build-up and drop add to the tense atmosphere, cleaving the thin line between the reality and the psychological effects eating away at the protagonist. The cinematography is mind-boggling – elegant and breath-taking at the same time.

The post-production is well done, adding filters and subtle visual effects that make the vibe of the video infectiously haunting. To sum it up, the collaboration works perfectly, delivering a gratifying experience. From the direction to the music and the cinematography, every aspect comes together fittingly to engross the audience in a bizarre dimension."

Discrete’s Video for “In My Room” is an Urban Subterranean Science Fiction Horror Story

WED JULY 17, 2019

"Working with Colin Greenwood, Toronto’s Kyle Yip has created a song and video called 'In My Room' that sonically and visually feels like clandestine and arcane work in hidden places. The single bell tone marking time, the collage of metronomic percussion and tones, the nearly whispered vocals—all contributing to an evolving narrative wherein our usual rational methods of measure and assessing our reality come up wanting as we encounter higher or unhitherto known aspects of the universe around us. The video is like a David Cronenberg and Chris Cunningham science fiction/horror mash-up, the music like Aphex Twin gone minimal and mutated directly by aesthetics of free jazz."

DISCRETE TOES THE LINE OF SANITY IN NEW VIDEO “IN MY ROOM”

WED SEPT 4, 2019

"Multimedia artist Discrete, aka Kyle Yip, delivers an eerie video for his track “In My Room.” This techno sound features a single construction surveyor. Watch him as he goes through a soon to be demolished lower level of a building. His task is to map the infrastructures old utilities lines and foundation. All starts out normal, but as the video goes on, he descends deeper into paranoia as his measurements contradict his findings.

The video for “In My Room” has been held in high regard."

"I had the wonderful chance to interview Discrete, a multi-faceted artist from Canada and considered by the blogosphere a producer and DJ on the rise. What caught my attention is not only the fact that his full-length album ‘The Midas Touch’ was nominated for the Juno Award but also his creativity on sampling the right tunes. I’m definitely a new fan of his art in every sense of the word."

"This is the type of shit Massive Attack would have been into back in the hey-day of music videos. It has a strong concept behind it, it's snappy, and the director clearly has a very strong understanding of the medium and what he's trying to do. He understands film rhythm and it displays a true workmanlike understanding of how to match montage to music."
